"Your rules and regulations don't mean a thing to me"
When I was a teenager a new venue opened in Clarkston, MI called Pine Knob(DTE Energy). It's fairly well known that David Cassidy was the first act to grace the stage there. Not long after there was a concert featuring Sha Na NA, DR. John The Night Tripper and Quicksilver Messenger Service. We actually thought revolution was in the air, we were young and naive, but God did we have have fun. "Your rules and regulations don't mean a thing to me"

These guy's were the Turtles. In the early Seventies they formed " Flo & Eddie". I always thought of them as anti-rock stars. Considered , arguably, the finest voices in pop music. They now tour every summer as "The Turtles/Flo & Eddie" . My first "real" concert was Pink Floyd at Ford Auditorium in Detroit.A high school buddy and I, both 17, had purchased tickets for a Deep Purple concert that was ultimately canceled. We were given the option for a refund or to see a band called Pink Floyd. They were on tour of America promoting their "Meddle" album. The concert was performed in Quad, the only time I'd ever hear Quad live. and it was amazing. The band had just completed, but hadn't released, a record called "Dark Side of the Moon" which they played in it's entirety. We were the first in the world to hear this ground breaking record. The first time I saw this video was in the conference room of a FOX affiliate. It was for a presentation tape for "The Tracey Ullman Show" that was to be part of the new FOX schedule. MS. Ullman was a well known actress in England but unknown in the States. On the same tape was a new program called "Jump Street Chapel"(soon to be renamed "21 Jump Street") staring some kid named Depp. Whatever happened to him? Took the train to Toronto with some record label guys to see this band. Ran in to Catharine O'Hara from SCTV. Turns out her brother was the door man at the club the band was playing. In Jr. High, late at night, I would hold my transistor radio to my ear, while under the covers, listening to CKLW out of Windsor Canada. I wouldn't go to sleep until I heard my favorite song. Who knew the guitar player would become a major tool. In the late '70's, I worked with a lot of R&B acts. I spent a great deal of time at WATTS CLUB MOZAMBIQUE (it's still there in another iteration) and Henry's in Detroit . By far, my favorite artist, was Johnny "Guitar" Watson who played The Latin Quarter on Grand Boulevard. I can tell none of those stories. OK, this is an odd choice. GFR take and took a lot of grief. When I was a Freshman this was THE band. A Senior I looked up to told me to get this album. I practically wore it out. It reminds me of my first car, my first girlfriend and a lot of other firsts. "Sins a Good Man's Brother" is the opening track. Several years ago Govt. Mule covered this song. |
Jeff AllenVertical asked me to join his blog as a guest expert on "Nuggets" era music... Psychedelic, Garage and Fuzz. Are there others more qualified? You bet, but they weren't asked. He's also letting me write about anything I want… We'll see.
