We all have to start somewhere and Joe started in Akron with a band called the Measles. This is one of their first recordings
While a freshman in high school I discovered Rock & Roll. Oh I liked the Beatles and radio long before that but it was in the locker room of gym class that I discovered R&R. One of the cool Seniors was talking to a group of guy's about a record he liked. "Funk #49 is the coolest song ever and The James Gang are bad ass" he told his pals. Over hearing this I wondered what is Funk #49? He mentioned he heard it on WABX. I went home and found WABX on my radio and was captured. Soon I heard Funk #49and found out who the James Gang were. Of course they were led by Joe Walsh later of Eagles fame. We all have to start somewhere and Joe started in Akron with a band called the Measles. This is one of their first recordings

Tom Morwatts was my friend. He was a brilliant musician, songwriter and a member of the Mutants. Tom and I started off working together and later became friends. In subsequent years I lost track of Tom but never stooped thinking about him. Tom was tough as nails but like most tough guy's he had a heart of gold. Tom ,back in the day, enjoyed bombing around in his late sixties Plymouth Fury. Sometimes I would ride with him. Mostly I talked and Tom would, occasionally, add... his insights. I'm not sure everyone understood how brilliant Tom was. At one point I sat in a studio and watched Tom and the rest of the band write "Molecular Weights" a witty song dripping with sarcasm. It was like witnessing a master class. Genius is an over used word. In Tom's case it wasn't used enough. Goodbye my friend. We won't see your like again. Although not as popular as their first hit "Walk Away Renee" I believe this record holds up better. I also enjoy the animation. This record by Desmond Dekker & The Ace's was a surprise hit in 1968. The first example of Reggae most listeners had ever heard. While in college radio I learned of the "bathroom cut". This was a loooong song that would give you time to…er…well you know. This song actually attracted girls wearing flower print dresses. Of course all they wanted to do was read poetry. I give you RENAISSANCE. From England the Nashville Teens had a hit with this record in the US in 1964. This little known Detroit "girl" band released some great music. Originally on the Detroit Sound label The Wanted released "In the Midnight Hour" in 1967. Picked up by A&M the record became a regional hit. |
Jeff AllenVertical asked me to join his blog as a guest expert on "Nuggets" era music... Psychedelic, Garage and Fuzz. Are there others more qualified? You bet, but they weren't asked. He's also letting me write about anything I want… We'll see.
