RONNIE LANE

Ronnie Lane was the bass player, and one of the songwriters, for a band called the FACES.
The FACES were my favorite band and Ronnie was my favorite musicians.
I never missed a FACES show when they came to Detroit.  I always tried to obtain a seat stage right so I could watch Ronnie,  Why?.  Well, in a band that was all about fun (they kept a bar onstage) Ron looked like he was having the most fun.
Ronnie had decided to leave the FACES and form his own band.  The band considered Detroit their home away from home.  They loved Detroit and Detroit loved them back.
I attended Ronnie's last show in Detroit with the FACES. Sitting stage right I had an excellent view of Ron and the band.  He was dressed flash, as always, in white trousers and vest with a Black shirt.  After every song he would turn toward the audience and beam the biggest grin I've ever seen on a musician.  He seemed to be taking it all in.  I had no idea this was the last time I would see Ronnie but I think he knew this would be his last appearance with the FACES in Detriot.
Ronnie passed a way in 1996 of an aggressive form of MS.  I never met him but I sure do miss him.  On April 1 he would have been 71.
Attached is a clip of Ronnie singing With Rod and the FACES to "Maybe I'm Amazed"

Terry Reid?

While breaking in as a college DJ the fellow who was teaching me the ropes suggested I play a Terry Reid record.  I gave him a quizzical look as I had never heard of Reid.  My tutor gave me a sour look and shook his head as if to say 'you really don't know anything do you?'  I put an album called "River" to a track called "Live Life".  From the first notes I became a life long fan of Terry Reid.
Terry's big claim to fame is the fact he was asked by Jimmy Page to become the lead singer for The New Yardbirds soon to become Led Zeppelin.  Jimmy turned Page down and suggested Robert Plant.  Reid went on with his solo career while Plant Page and crew went on to make history.
From the 1973 album "River" the track "Live Life".

A true artist

Harry Nilsson was an artist, pure and simple.  In the early Seventies it was impossible to listen to radio for more than an hour without hearing one of his songs. Starting in the Sixties Nilsson wrote and recorded for TV, films, commercials and recorded hundreds of songs for popular release.  Nilsson never toured and rarely performed live.  He was, after all, an artist(songwriter).  Like many "artists" Harry liked to drink and lived an idiosyncratic lifestyle.  At the outset of his career he was championed by no less than the Beatles.  John Lennon and Ringo Starr became life long pal's and drinking buddies.  Cass Elliot(formally of the Mamas and Papas) died while residing at Harry's flat in London in 1974.  Keith Moon, Who drummer and Harry's good friend, died in the same room as Elliot in 1978 as a guest of Nilsson's.
Choosing a song was almost impossible but I went with the odd radio hit "Coconut"
Harry Nilssion passed away of a massive heart attack in 1994.

Almost made the 27 club

Gram Parsons almost made the 27 club. Past member of the Byrds Gram formed "The Flying Burrito Brothers" with another former member Chris Hillman.  After being "let go" by the Burritos Gram moved to France and spent time working with the Stone's on the "Exile on Main Street" record.  Returning to the states he developed a relationship with Emmy Lou Harris and recorded two solo records.  Gram died at 26 years old of alcohol and drug abuse.  This is a tune from the Burrito's with Gram and Chris on vocals.

We all have to start somewhere

While a freshman in high school I discovered Rock & Roll.  Oh I liked the Beatles and radio long before that but it was in the locker room of gym class that I discovered R&R.  One of the cool Seniors was talking to a group of guy's about a record he liked.  "Funk #49 is the coolest song ever and The James Gang are bad ass"  he told his pals.  Over hearing this I wondered what is Funk #49?  He mentioned he heard it on WABX.  I went home and found WABX on my radio and was captured.  Soon I heard Funk #49and found out who the James Gang were.  Of course they were led by Joe Walsh later of Eagles fame.
We all have to start somewhere and Joe started in Akron with a band called the Measles.  This is one of their first recordings

Vertical asked me to join his blog as a guest expert on "Nuggets" era music... Psychedelic, Garage and Fuzz.  Are there others more qualified?  You bet, but they weren't asked. He's also letting me write about anything I want…  We'll see.
