"Disc Jockey" comes from the discs of vinyl that records are made from. This DJ is running behind. He really should have had the record ready to go before he turned on the microphone.
On the plus side, he's got the wireless headphones from the future he won in a fiddle contest with The Devil. Unfortunately, wireless tech wasn't available in 1983, so he mostly just hears static. That probably explains the late needle-drop on the LP.
Notice also, that he is a pleasant looking fellow, but his features are all pushed toward the center of his face. This is known as "a face for radio".
The strange machine behind him is a "reel-to-reel" machine. See your local museum for details. In sixteen minutes his shift is over, and the reel-to-reel will take over.
Also, he is overdressed. Even for 1983.
