Welcome To Our Radio Station

Somewhere around 1983, I toured WOMC-FM Detroit with my Cub Scout pack.  They gave us this coloring book that explained it all.

My most vivid memory of this day was finishing the tour by watching the new WOMC TV commercial. The punchline to the commercial was the narrator asking a DJ "What would Detroit be without the 'Big O'?".  Then the DJ says "I dunno... Detrit?"  I looked for the video on YouTube with no success.  If you know where to find it, I'd love to see it!

On this blog, I'll go page by page in the book, comparing 1983's idea of radio to today's.  It's actually quite similar, save a few minor differences.  For example: Radio stations were once given money by their owners to promote the station and hire the best people for each job.

Today, people aren't really necessary, except for the Sales department.  As soon as they figure out how to computerize that department, the radio industry's dream shall be realized.

But I ain't bitter...

The inside cover is a very modern orange.  When I saw this at thirteen years old, I knew I was glimpsing a future trendy color.

I love that you kept that book. I have a "power" bumper sticker somewhere along with several other odds and ends from back in the day that I refuse to give up to the trash. My thoughts on that station are as follows... You play terrible music and I never (recently) had you on my pre-set. But then again the radio as a whole now a days isn't that fantastic... I don't keep one station on longer than one song. I don't own a ipod, ipad, or have any music on my phone. I am old school. I play records, cd's and yes I busted out my cassettes last month because I wanted to listen to smashing pumpkins and janes addiction. (I own one of the very few remaining cars with a tape deck) Remember the cd adapter??? LOL Some kids will never understand what "Real" music is. It is something you down load, not re-wind. It is instant and it doesn't skip. It was something you worked for and even spent the night out on the side walk to make sure you got a ticket. (been there, done that) I agree with you, as with the milkman the DJ will slowly fade away which is sad. I am not a fan of a computer playing everything...which we all know isn't everything... I don't hear "The dead milkman" Which I would fine fitting. :)
