I created a new home page for you to land on when you visit me. It should make things slightly easier to navigate. I think it's pretty self-explanatory, so I won't waste your time explaining it.

Everything is still here. Unseen Cinema has been reassigned to Starbase 1138:42. Interviews and Welcome to Our Radio Station have been poured into the Radio Bucket. And this "What's New?" page replaces the old Home Page.

Dang it. I said I wasn't going to explain it!

This slightly tweaked format will make it easier for me organize, and hopefully easier for you to enjoy The Vertical Files.

There's a new Facebook meme going around that encourages you to describe one thing with another thing. I hope I got that right.

No new stuff for today, but I'll make up for it by completely redesigning the site for you. Deal? Monday, The Vertical Files will have a slightly new look, and hopefully will be easier to navigate. 

All the same stuff will be here, just in slightly different places.

Until then, this week I covered the movie Forbidden Planet two different ways (kind of), built a silly Lego space ship, and reminisced about David Gray.

It's the weekend, and I encourage you to visit a local theatre. A Bright Room Called Day finishes this weekend in Ferndale, MI, and I liked it!

I had a lazy nerdy weekend. Loved it.

Tweaked the website ever so slightly. Did Mythbusters & Futurama marathons.

Saw one of my favorite movies at the Redford Theatre. The review of the experience is up today. Movie review tomorrow.

Reassembled some Legos. The LEGO Group enjoyed viewing it, I think you might too.

Tonight, there's a play happening in Ferndale, MI. This coming weekend will be its last, so you have not many chances left to see it. I saw it last week. I liked it!

How long was the SOPA blackout supposed to be? I think I mis-calculated or something.

I'd direct you to a website for more info, but it may be blacked-out. A few details from Wikipedia:

In January 2012, Reddit announced plans to black out its site for twelve hours on January 18, as company co-founder Alexis Ohanian announced he was going to testify to Congress. "He’s of the firm position that SOPA could potentially 'obliterate' the entire tech industry," Paul Tassi wrote in Forbes. Tassi also opined that Google and Facebook would have to join the blackout to reach a sufficiently broad audience. Other prominent sites that are reported to be participating in the January 18 blackout are Cheezburger Sites, Mojang, Major League Gaming, and Boing Boing.

Wider protests have been considered and in some cases committed to by major internet sites, with high profile bodies such as Google, Facebook, Twitter, Yahoo, Amazon, AOL, Reddit, Mozilla, LinkedIn, IAC, eBay, PayPal, Wordpress and Wikimedia being widely named as "considering" or committed to an "unprecedented" internet blackout on January 18, 2012.

On January 17 a Republican aide on Capitol Hill said that the protests were making their mark, with SOPA having already become "a dirty word beyond anything you can imagine."

I originally intended to debut a new Geek feature today called Starbase 1138:42. It will cover all things Geek and Nerd. The feature still debuts today (right now, in fact), but with an unexpected twist!

Had I come up with the idea sooner, it's where you would have found my Superman II review. I have a couple of geeky things in the hopper about the Six Million Dollar Man, Indiana Jones and Star Trek. But those things can wait, because Monday night I saw a play that I want to discuss.

Categorizing thoughts can get tricky. There are really no rules for this kind of thing. If "geek stuff" is things like movies, TV and comic books, does that include plays? 

I'm going to go ahead and say "yes". Or "yep". Or "Oh yeah". Or some other variation of an affirmative statement spoken in English.

I wanted to get to talking about the play as soon as I could, because it isn't playing forever. So check out my thoughts about A Bright Room Called Day, and if you like it, I encourage you to share it!

I did not watch the Golden Globe Awards show last night. Instead, I typed a long essay about why I wasn't watching them. It came across a little mean and grumpy, but I was planning on posting it anyway because I want this site to be truthful with you.

More honesty:

I took an unplanned break from posting here. I want to put something up new every weekday, but if I have regular "life" things happening, I get behind. I know I wrote on my resumé that I'm a self-starter, but I kinda fibbed just to get the job. (I also do not have a degree in mud-flap design engineering. Sorry.)

It's more difficult than I expected to write every day. You know how writers always talk about how difficult it can be to write? Turns out, that's because it is.

So, I'm a little disappointed in myself, but I'm not gonna beat myself up about it. This is a totally new thing for me. There's a learning curve involved. There are new disciplines and patterns I still need to work at (including not ending sentences with prepositions).

Your support and feedback has been really supportive and mind-blowing. I really do appreciate it!

This week, I'm looking at adding two new sections to the site. One for geeks and one for more radio memories. I'll announce them when they're ready!
