From Philly they formed while attending Penn, The Magic Mushrooms performing their single "Let the Rain Be Me" in 1966.
One of the first psychedelic bands, The 13th. Floor Elevators, were really a garage band from Austin, Texas. While their 1966 song "You're Gonna Miss Me" only charted at #55 it was an enormously influtional record. Singer/guitarist Roky Eckerson suffered with schizophrenia for many years yet still continues to tour as a solo act.
A favorite on the Detroit scene in the late '60's Wilson Mower Pursuit, they never achieved a major label deal.
"Touch",a psychedelic acid drenched record, is considered the first prog rock record. The group broke up after the record was completed. This record is extremely rare. Rumor had it the band was unable to reproduce the album live so they broke up. It's not true. As MR.Hearst used to say "always print the rumor"
One of the best bands in Michigan were The Frost. Their second album, recorded live, featured the anthemic track "Rock & Roll Music". Released in 1969 the recording features the late guitarist Dick Wagner.
The Scott Richard Case, from Ann Arbor, Michigan, released their first Capitol album in 1968. The first single was "Black Sheep"
The Strawberry Alarm Clock were a little too syrupy for my taste. The group had a top 5 hit in 1967 with "Incense and Peppermints"
Vertical asked me to join his blog as a guest expert on "Nuggets" era music... Psychedelic, Garage and Fuzz. Are there others more qualified? You bet, but they weren't asked. He's also letting me write about anything I want… We'll see.
