The scene was a small one, almost tiny. Leather jackets and mini-skirts were the wardrobe of choice. We'd gather at some rough bar, invariably with a small stage in one corner, to check out the latest band. Generally, almost always, the club/bar was located in a old broken down neighborhood. After the band(s) finished and the bar/club closed a few of us, usually including musicians, would head for a bar that would sell us a couple six packs after hours. Then we'd drive around all night amongst the empty desolate buildings of Detroit. Some of us have passed on, some went on to fame and success most have led interesting albeit normal lives.It's the early morning drives I miss most.
Filmmaker Jim Jarmusch has given a gift to Detroit. The creator of such films as "Down by Law", "Dead Man". "Mystery Train" and "Year of the Horse" has written and directed "Only Lovers Left Alive" a myth about vampires.This not a horror film although it is about Vampires. It has been called a comedy and a romance movie. To me it looks like a home movie from my youth.
Adam and Eve, the Vampires, enjoy early morning drives around the devastated areas of Detroit where most of the film takes place. Jarmusch captures the grander of the city with out resorting to ruin porn. "Only Lovers Left Alive" is Jarmusch's finest work.
